The 50th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between Romania and Canada at embassy level

The relationships between the two countries, initially characterised by pragmatism and to the point cooperation inside international organisations, have developed continually over the past decades, based on well-defined coordinates: Euro-Atlantic values and common interests, shared commitment to the French-speaking family and the presence of a sizeable Romanian community on Canada’s soil. Ties between Romania and Canada are marked by political, military and economic cooperation projects, as well as by a substantive political dialogue. Canada is one of Romania’s important allies inside NATO that contributes toward NATO’s measures to reassure the allies in Eastern Europe, including joint education and training exercises with NATO participation conducted in Romania,” MAE said in a press statement released on Monday.

The statement said that lifting this year visa requirements for Romanian nationals staying in Canada for short periods of time as well as for Romanian nationals travelling to Canada for travel or business purposes will contribute toward the amplification and diversification of the bilateral ties and brining to fruition the entire potential for trans-Atlantic cooperation.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is voicing conviction that the relationships between Romania and Canada will consolidate and deepen given that coming into effect shortly of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada of the one part, and the European Union and its Member States, of the other part, as well as of the SPA Strategic Partnership between the EU and Canada.

Romania and Canada established their diplomatic ties at embassy level on April 3, 1967.

Diplomatic ties were first set on August 16, 1919 by opening Romania’s General Consulate in Montreal.
